Municipal Applications

BlueInGreen’s gas delivery technology is the perfect solution for municipal applications. Our systems have proven effective with water and wastewater treatment plant processes, as well as collection system H2S remediation.

The benefits of BlueInGreen’s technology over traditional technologies are lower operating costs, far greater flexibility over where and when dissolved oxygen is delivered to any point in the treatment process and precise control of wastewater DO even as flow rate and oxygen demands are continually changing.

BlueInGreen’s SDOX® gas delivery technology has many municipal applications.  An ideal application of our technology is odor and corrosion control by using dissolved oxygen for the prevention of hydrogen sulfide.  Our innovative process results in near 100% efficient utilization of the oxygen.  The delivery of the supersaturated, oxygenated water is achieved with NO bubbles that would allow the oxygen to escape the wastewater being treated.

Hydrogen Sulfide Remediation, Elimination, and Prevention. (Odor Control)

Dissolved oxygen injection is an effective, non-chemical, environmentally friendly treatment for wastewater; it is used for the prevention of hydrogen sulfide formation and/or oxidation of sulfides in the wastewater.  The process is similar to the nitrate addition process, except that dissolved oxygen is the oxidizing agent instead of nitrate.  The green process is also much less expensive to operate than the nitrate addition process.  Our oxygen injection process involves adding oxygen into force mains through a supersaturated carrier stream of water; this water contains between 300 – 350mg/l of dissolved oxygen.

Bacteria in wastewater collection systems will use dissolved oxygen, nitrate, and sulfate as oxygen sources for respiration, in that order of preference.  Dissolved oxygen is usually present in fresh wastewater, but is rapidly depleted by biological activity.  When dissolved oxygen and nitrates in the wastewater are depleted, the bacteria begin utilizing sulfate for respiriation.  The byproduct of the sulfate uptake process is dissolved sulfide.  The dissolved sulfide combines with hydrogen ions to form hydrogen sulfide.  Other compounds such as indol, skatol (ammonia) and mercaptans may also be formed under anaerobic conditions and significantly contribute to overall odor in the collection system.

Oxygen injection works by providing dissolved oxygen for the bacteria, to prevent the bacteria from starting the sulfate reduction process.  The advantages of using dissolved oxygen injection, through our patented SDOX process, over chemical treatments such as calcium nitrate, magnesium hydroxide, ferric chloride (iron salts), sodium hypochlorite (bleach), potassium permanganate, and hydrogen peroxide are as follows: No adverse pH effects, residual salts, or residual nitrates that can affect downstream operations at wastewater treatment plants.

Other examples of how our technology can be used in municipal applications include:

  • Reliable and efficient post-treatment aeration
  • Supplemental oxygen during periods of increased demand or periods of upset
  • Replacement of outdated oxygenation equipment with a more efficient system
  • Increase treatment capacity of the plant by providing more dissolved oxygen without a significant increase in infrastructure footprint
  • Odor control (see http://www.tpomag.com/editorial/2011/06/sensitive_noses for an interview with Robert Bowker, principal of Bowker & Associates, with regard to odors and their treatment)
  • Pre-oxygenation at the force main for odor control and microbial conditioning
  • Provide oxygenation during construction, maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Precise DO control in biological treatment for increased effectiveness of phosphorus removal
