INTRODUCTION

As a part of a large-scale plant expansion project, officials at the Bismarck Water Treatment Plant, with the help of AE2S Engineering and Environmental Services, looked to select and install a treatment system capable of precisely lowering pH for water stabilization. Because of the city’s hard water supply, the system would need to be capable of lime softening and recarbonation processes. Bidding for the project began in April 2014 with an anticipated commission date in May 2015.

Plant officials and project engineers opted to install twin CDOX systems, each equipped with duplex pumps, variable frequency drives (VFDs), a pH analyzer and two pH probes. Designed to deliver 300 lbs of carbon dioxide per hour, BlueInGreen’s automated control would provide rapid, reliable results – minimizing the basin size, reducing the downstream pipe length and lowering capital costs in the process.

After startup and installation, plant managers were immediately able to capitalize on BlueInGreen’s fully automated pH control system. The CDOX is designed to use 40 percent less carbon dioxide than conventional direct injection and bubble diffuser systems. The dual CDOX units were able to reduce chemical costs, water usage and power consumption while providing the operators the convenience of BlueInGreen’s industry-leading remote control and monitoring technology. By precisely measuring the amount of carbon dioxide injected into the facility’s water supply, the CDOX units are projected to provide the Bismarck Water Treatment Plant complete project payback within one year.
