INTRODUCTION

After recently completing a major plant improvements project, facility managers were unsatisfied with their recarbonation system. Despite the large capital costs invested on the competitor's technology, plant staff opted to pilot BlueInGreen’s CDOX solution in an effort to lower water usage and power requirements of the recarbonation process. The facility has a design flow of approximately 160 MGD and needed a system capable of stabilizing pH levels within three minutes and reducing plant operational costs.


METHOD

Ultimately, BlueInGreen piloted its state-of-the-art dissolution technology and impressed plant staff with the quality of design and manufacturing, as well as stellar service and support. The CDOX utilizes the world’s most efficient method of dissolving carbon dioxide into water, saving on power, water and other operational expenses. Rather than using inefficient bubble diffusers or static mixers, the CDOX uses a proprietary process to dissolve high concentrations of carbon dioxide into a small carrier stream, providing precise pH adjustment at a fraction of the cost. The pilot was so successful that plant staff decided to purchase the CDOX, turn off the competitor's technology, and capture the BIG savings.


THE CDOX REQUIRED 90 PERCENT LESS WATER, USED 24 PERCENT LESS CARBON DIOXIDE AND WILL SAVE THE PLANT APPROXIMATELY $91,000 ANNUALLY AS A RESULT.


RESULTS

The CDOX reduced the required carrier stream from 2,020 to 210 gallons per minute at average conditions and also lowered carbon dioxide usage from 595 to 450 pounds per hour, all while effectively stabilizing pH levels within the required three-minute span. In addition to the savings, the CDOX provided operational flexibility for plant staff through remote monitoring and control.


CONCLUSION

With a dramatic decrease in water costs and energy usage, the replacement project was deemed a success by the water treatment plant management. The CDOX is projected to save $91,000 annually, providing complete project payback within a few years. Had the CDOX been designed around the initial improvement project, an estimated $500,000 could have been saved in installation costs alone.
